D.C. Trip!!!
Ok so i may be catching a few of you off guard by posting less than two weeks after my last post, but SOOO many people were asking me about my trip....that i decided to write about it.
Here is what I (we: me, ryan and dave) did, in a slightly chronologically ordered list with comments.
Day 1-2: took off about 2, stopped in Alex at Dave's place and at Ryan's in Brooklyn Park....then in Plymouth at Dusty and Karla's place (which you all knew)...from there on the roads sucked, all through Wisconsin it was blizzardy and icey. I drove until Madison then the other guys took their turns....we drove straight through and made it to the D.C. area around 5 pm, but not to our destination until 830 due to the unfortunate bum directions we got from a "friend" who we visited out there. Instead of going south of D.C. we ended up driving through one of the worst areas in the country to drive through at the worst time...which wasnt really that bad, kinda fun actually. We ended up right dead center in the middle of town (Im talking constitution avenue between the washington monument and the capital building downtown). When we finally got to our friends place (her name is Kelly) we didnt have time to do much so we just went to eat at this cool steakhouse and spent the night at her place (her parents offered to put us up for the whole time we were there).
Day 3: We got up bright and early (translation: we forgot to set an alarm and were the last one's up by hours....making us look like bums in Kelly's living room in front of her whole family). Then Kelly and her older sister took us and kinda showed us around the city....we went to the Holocaust Museum, ate chinese, and did a few other random things before they had to leave. After they left we stayed in town and wandered around for two hours before finally finding Ford's Theater just before closing. After this point now my memory is a little sketchy as far as when we did what....but i believe this night is when we checked out all the monuments. The closest thing was the new WWII memorial so we checked that out (it kinda pissed me off though because even though Clinton was the one who had it built..it was finished just recently so GW put his name on it and of course gave himself all the credit-something no other presidents had done with the monuments they had made, selfish prick). After that we walked all the way along the almost empty reflecting pond to the Lincoln Memorial (by this time is was getting pretty dark). It was weird to be inside at night with that huge ole Abe sittin in his chair..almost made you feel you were back at that time....and a bunch of his speeches/saying were etched on the walls. From there we quickly went through the Vietnam and Korean War Memorials, which were neat and beautiful of course..but werent quite as interesting when it was so dark. Then we decided to go see the Jefferson Memorial (which is about a mile away, and across the basin) because we had heard it was really beautiful at night...we werent let down, it was amazing. We had to walk paths all around the basin to get there and it took us almost an hour..but we got some awesome pictures from across the water with it all lit up, that was probably the coolest part of the whole trip. Then we got there and I read all the passages on the walls and it made me think...this is what our country is supposed to be about....but not now, alas :(. Downstairs there was a big gallery and tons of info about Jefferson and it was all really interesting, but i didnt have time to read it all because we had to get back before Kelly's family all went to bed and we couldnt get in (Kelly works at 5am at a coffee house, so we didnt wanna keep her up, but later on that wasnt a problem).
Day 4: this time we got smarter....and set an alarm....we were up, showered, and gone by 930, out to see everything else DC has to offer. We saw a bunch of the smithsonians (mainly the natural history and air and space). After those we were pretty much done with downtown for the day cause it was 530 (museums closing time) and we had already seen all the monuments so we headed back to the house. We decided that we didnt wanna burden Kelly's family anymore, so after hours of calling hotels we finally got a room. It was pretty late by then, but we wanted to do something fun...so we all went to the midnight showing of Constantine (its really cool that theaters are open so late....and this theater was freakin' cool...two stories with a huge escalator to get to the top floor...which we had to take) The movie, in my opinion, was actually kinda cool, i can see where people say it wasnt a great movie, but it kept my attention (which is hard to do, i tend to fall asleep as most of you probably already know). After that we headed to the hotel and then to Denny's, and then back to the hotel.
Day 5: This day Dave had plans to meet up with some college students to lobby for higher education at the capital and stuff like that. Ryan and I were like screw that shit, cya later Dave, and off he went. Ill tell his story later on, but back to me: Ryan and I decided to get a tour of the capital, so we got some tickets (which were free...like everything else in the city as far as national stuff goes), but they werent until 3, so checked out the art museum and something else, eat, then checked out the capital tour. The tour itself was actually kinda lame...the coolest part was before the tour started when we got to walk on the outside of the building around and pretty much up to the top....it was a really nice view towards the washington monument. But once the tour started we only got to see a few rooms, mainly the rotunda..and it only lasted like half an hour. Then we met back up with Dave and this was his story:
Dave met up with some students from our school and also Winona State, they had appointments with both of our state senators, but Dave didnt make it to the first one, so he went to the one with Mark Dayton. But by the time Dayton got out of a meeting and could meet with the students, all of the students had to get back on their bus and go home. But Dayton said anyone who still wants to talk can come with me to the capital...being the only one left, Dave said....sure, Ill go. So off when Dave with Mark Dayton on a walk....then an underground trolley (where only Congressman and staff were supposed to be, but when security asked who Dave was, Dayton said "dont worry, he's with me") then finally to the capital, talking about politics/education all the time. I didnt get many of the specifics of the convo, but Dave said he seems like a really cool guy who actually cares for students and is willing to stand up for whatever he believes in (Dayton was the one who in front of Congress called Condoleeza Rice a lier right to her face, and is not too popular for it). So anyways, Dave had a pretty cool experience, maybe I shoulda gone with him being that the capital tour was so lame. After this we went out to eat with Kelly and her sister again at this supposedly really famous small ma and pop diner that took us like an hour to get too, then we went back to the hotel, to denny's again (for dessert), then to bed.
Day 6: Our last hoorah.
This was to be our final day in DC, because it was Wednesday and we had to be back by noon on Friday cause Dave had to work, and we had decided to NOT drive straight through again. We got up early and went to Arlington National Cemetary, then walked all the way across the river and then to the U.S. history museum. We knew Dave would take all freaking day in there, so Ryan and i went through and left Dave to himself (he's a history/sociology major). After we were done we looked all over for Dave, but couldnt find him...then we decided, fuck that, were hungry....so we went to fuddruckers and our orders got lost and it took forever. By now it was about the time where we wanted to take off, but we still couldnt find Dave, and he was the only one without a cell phone. So we looked around for an hour or two before he called me on my cell from a payphone. He told us where he was at so we were gonna meet him somewhere in between, but Ryan and I decided instead to sneak around the side and videotape Dave looking all lost for 20 minutes, it was hilarious. Then we played some ultimate frisbee on the mall (this huge grassy area between the capital and Washington monument, its usually used for sports, picnics, etc)...then we went back to Kelly's house to say goodbye and by the time we left it was 10pm and we had to say goodbye to DC. I drove 6 hours that night when i decided we were gonna stop at Washington, PA (fitting eh?).
Day 7: Whole lotta fucking nothing (driving)...we made it back at 530am friday....just enough time for Dave to get some more sleeping in and for me to stay up till 830am for absolutely no reason.
As far as what we accomplished while we were there...nothing, it was spring break, we cant do work on spring break, plus we woulda probably got shot or something. I wish there was something i could do about Bush being in office, but really....even if i did take care of him...look whose next in line, ugghhhh, dare i say even more evil a person. Although it is kinda funny that you mentioned that, Karla, cause my parents were kinda suspicious of this whole thing, my mom asked if i had "alterior motives" and i said, "probably, but dont worry". Also my mom was suspicious that I was going just to visit this girl, which was of course ridiculous, like i would ever go all the way to DC just for a girl, huh! Its also funny though, that whenever i go home, my parents think im some psycho evil democrat now...and when im with my friends they think im some psycho evil republican...nobody believes me that Im really neither and actually hate the two party system in general..but as of right now im definitely siding more with the democratic party, mainly cause Bush and his buddies are douchebags (did i spell that right, i dont know)
So thats the basic summation, although ive forgotten alot of stuff im sure, and also left out alot of the smaller happenings that, umm...happened...but those would take forever to talk about, but basically included things like: Ryan losing his cell phone on the metro, getting lost in DC area like 6 times, prostitutes!, many car arguments, being woke up by something licking my face (Kelly's dog supposedly, but probably Dave), service engine light coming on in my car...then going off, thankfully, videotaping Dave looking lost not knowing where Ryan and I are at least 5 times, obnoxious order takers at restaraunts, insane asshole drivers who cut you off if you dare actually use your blinker, and many others i cant think of right now. but thats my story, and im sticking too it until i come up with something even more outlandish.
